I buy everything Anne Stuart has written, however, I thought she wrote romance. This is NOT a romance novel. This is a thriller. Yes, there is some romance, but very, very minor and has nothing to do with the story. This is a story about a rather timid American woman with self esteem issues who moves to Paris and unknowingly get's involved with a serial killer. And the married, retirement aged French police detective who tries to solve what has become known as the Grandmother Murders. At first I was disappointed. I mean she gets involved with a creepy OCD mime for Christ sake. Which should be your first indication she's not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. But, I do like thrillers and Anne has never let me down and so I continued to read. Once I let go of my preconceived notions I found that I couldn't put the book down. True, Claire is possibly the most naive woman known to the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries and there are holes in the story, but hey, nobody's perfect. All in all I found this a rather enjoyable read and surprising page turner.Product details

An eerie story of the murder of old grandmother's when it rains in Paris. An American woman becomes involved with a strange man who is a mime. Living with him in Paris with his daughter, she gradually discovers he is not the man he pretends to be. Another great book by Stuart full of suspense and romance.
I never liked mimes or clowns and always found them to be creepy. Don't read this one after dark. I found Clair to be very naive and controlled by sex. Tom on the other hand, while trying to find himself found a lot more. It's books like this that convince me that it's better to stay in a country where you speak the language.
The story started off too slowly. There were too many characters involved, & I couldn't understand how they tied in together. I wanted to stop reading this book, but I'm glad that I kept reading a little further because when one of the characters mentioned Marc's name, it started to come together. It got to where I couldn't put the book down. Rather dark, but it was great!
This story was originally written in 1988 before the convenience of the internet and cell phones. It's still a wonderful story of a guilt ridden heroine who in spite of the odds against her (a learning disability that prevents her from learning other languages) not only survives she thrives. A terrific story.
Loved the story and the great suspense - author did a good job keeping the reader on the edge of the seat. The only thing I didn't like about this story was the heroine. She did too many stupid things - it's a wonder to me she survived! Without giving anything away, let's just say that the heroine does not trust her gut instincts. Time and again she makes excuses no matter how many times she's proven wrong. So no, she's definitely not my type of heroine but, having said that, she does have a redeeming quality which I very much liked and respected about her. The way she still cared for her fiance's stepdaughter well being even when that stepdaughter behaves quite cold towards her is admirable. Aside from the heroine's annoying behavior, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves murder thrillers.
Ms. Stuart has a definite writing style and her men have a certain edge and attitude. This book has the writing style and the "leading man" definitly has an edge... but this is not what I have come to expect from Ms. Stuart.
The book was writen in 1988 and be warned, it doesn't follow her usual norm. It wasn't that I didn't like the book, it just doen't follow her usual format. This is more suspense than romance and the book is full of secondary characters. The good guy, Tom, spends most of his time in the background and the villians and the Inspector are way more interesting than him.
I started off disliking Claire, the leading lady, but as the story moves along her character grows, so that by the end of the book I found myself liking her. I just wished I could say the same about Tom, there just wasn't enough of him in the story to really get to know him. I found him boring. I guess Ms. Stuart thought she should give Claire a man to go home with so the book could have a happily ever after. Whatever.
Take out the romance part of the book and the story was okay. Although it did take me about four days to read the book, when I usually read most of Ms. Stuart's book in one day (or late into the night). I'm not sorry I read the book as I will read any Anne Stuart book I come across, because I really like most of her books and I can now add this one to my collection.
So, if you're a big fan get it, otherwise you might want to pass this one over for one of her newer books, like the "Ice" series.
Claire is a super nice girl who has incredibly bad luck with the men in her life. She leaves a bad situation at home to live with Marc in fabulous Paris. Doesn’t that just sound like a dream come true? She finds Paris isn’t really as amazing as it should have been, and she is having her doubts about Marc as he slowly manipulates her into his ideal girlfriend. He isolates Claire in a city where few people speak English and just venturing outside is hugely frustrating for her. It is interminably cold and rainy and someone is going around murdering little old ladies.
I love the way each of the characters is unveiled in this book, the good and the bad. Marc is an unredeemable creep, but a fascinating one nonetheless. There’s a lot of darkness in this story, but that’s what Anne Stuart does best. The Paris she writes about is cold , damp, miserable and very much like the one day we spent in there a couple of years ago. Such fun!
